Our 4th graders had an unforgettable day in Madison!

They kicked off the morning exploring hands-on science at the University of Wisconsin Geology Museum, sparking curiosity and discovery. Afterward, they enjoyed lunch in the heart of campus at Library Mall, surrounded by hardworking college students.

The day wrapped up with an incredible tour and behind-the-scenes look at the Wisconsin State Capitol, where students dove deep into Wisconsin history and explored the three branches of government in action.

A day full of learning, exploration, and big dreams for the future! 🏛️📚✨

Drew has been a dedicated member of National Honor Society for the past 3 years and chose to give back to his community through a simple, but meaningful act of service — snow removal for neighbors after snowfalls. ❄️

Thank you to Tracy Gifford from the WRTP/Big Step program for taking senior Aiden Johnson to an externship with Operating Engineers Local 139 in Coloma, WI!

This valuable experience gave Aiden a firsthand look at careers in the trades. Looking ahead, Osseo-Fairchild is excited to partner with WRTP to offer a pre-apprenticeship class next year. This program will help students explore opportunities in the skilled trades and open doors to a wide range of careers in the building industry.

May is Brain Tumor Awareness Month—a time to support patients, advance research, and raise awareness for all types of brain tumors. 💙

Our Advanced Skills Anatomy & Physiology students explored what brain tumors are, studied real medical images, and identified symptoms based on different areas of the brain.

Today, they watched an actual surgical resection removing a brain tumor. Students then read about fluorescent surgery which allows doctors to label tumors with fluorescent tags that will make the tumor 'light up' during surgery to help differentiate healthy tissue from cancerous tissue.

Finally, students 'scrubbed in' to simulate the procedure with gelatin brains, UV flashlights and UV tagged 'tumors'. Students created patient notes for the surgery indicating where the tumor was located, symptoms that suggested a tumor in that specific area of the brain, and if the removal the tumor was successful or if the use of UV light showed more tissue needed to be removed. 🧠

🌟 NHS Senior Spotlight: Elizabeth Zimmerman 🌟

Our National Honor Society seniors have spent this year giving back through meaningful service projects that reflect leadership, compassion, and a commitment to making a difference. Each project highlights the unique passions and values of our students while creating a positive impact in our school and community.

Elizabeth Zimmerman
📚 Years in NHS: 3 years

🐄 Service Project: I started a program that is dedicated to helping young kids get their foot into the livestock industry. I open my farm to host one on one visits with kids where I give them the experience of show cattle. Starting with a halter, and a bath, I explain all of the basics I've learned from my prior engagements. As we move into the barn, I explain the different types of brushes, combs, and equipment I use to keep my cattle comfortable and safe. I explain the importance of staying calm, slow movements, and desensitization. All of these are lessons that have been passed down to me, and I have the strong intention to pass them on to the next generation. I make sure to point out the different sections on the animal, and clarify the difference between a heifer, cow, steer, and bull. These are both extremely important sections for people to be knowledgeable in, even if they choose a path unrelated to agriculture. I also explain the significance of water, proper feed, and a clean, dry environment. We end the experience by mixing a feed pan and giving the heifer her nightly feed.

Why This Project Matters: For me, this has been an outstanding way for me to connect with my community, spread the word of agriculture, and take one step closer to my goal of educating out about beef cattle. While this may seem like a small picture project, it has allowed me to see my full potential in agriculture and gain further knowledge of the gaps of rural agriculture being taught in elementary schools.

Thank you, Elizabeth, for your dedication to service, leadership, and making a difference in our community!
